ContentAbout Laura Ivancie

Laura Ivancie, granddaughter of 1980's Portland mayor Frank Ivancie, has been singing all of her life, even while pursuing a career as a basketball star. She followed that dream to its conclusion on a full ride scholarship through college. After graduating with a degree in Psychology, she did what anyone with a world-class voice would do; she became a firefighter for the US Forest Service. Only after the pleas of her friends and fellow firemen became too much did she give in to her inner voice and give her gift of music to the world.

Her music is a mix of many genres, including elements of folk, rock, country and soul. However, you cannot put any song into any one category, for the blend is done so tastefully that it defies all of them. Add to that lyrics that reach inside a person and pull at your core, and you start to get a feeling for why Laura is stealing hearts all over Portland. She is able to share the darkest moments of her life and still resolve the songs in a positive light, helping the listener overcome their own pain. Besides the music, she is a genuine, caring and loving person who takes the time to meet as many fans as time allows after the show and makes eye contact with the crowd throughout. Her show really must be seen and heard to be fully appreciated.

Laura Ivancie has been playing all over Portland at venues like the White Eagle, the Thirsty Lion, the Camellia Lounge, the Buffalo Gap and more. After only four months she was invited to open for international acts An Horse and Wintersleep at Lola's room. Everywhere she goes, there is a feeling of "Why don't I know you?" in the air. Come see for yourself and get to know Laura Ivancie.

Matt Kirk Jazz and Art

Jazz on its own can take many forms. Matt Kirk Jazz focuses on the traditional styles of music that would be found in Las Vegas around the 1960’s. Also called ‘club jazz’, it’s a combination of vocal ballads, smooth background and sizzling instrumental improvisation.

Inspired by great club jazz and blues artists of this era, the Matt Kirk Jazz song list reflects selections from Billie Holliday, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughn and other great show-tunes from artists such as Sinatra and Nat. Whenever possible, the band plays the music as intended… “un-plugged”, acoustically, and with the right instruments.

About the musicians: While the core trio features Ron Murvihill on piano, John Garcia on percussion and Kirk on up-right bass, Matt Kirk Jazz is likened more as a community of performers that come together to play over 40 dates each year. Kirk plays with a revolving cast of local and national artists in his group, but the focus is always on showcasing the very best of the best.  Says Kirk: "It's all about great music, great players and having a fun performance. ...that's why we call it 'somewhat traditional jazz for the less snooty!".

See the trio, enjoy an hour of "meet the artist" and see the art of Matt Kirk Jazz through the month of October!

Soaring vocal harmonies and modern song writing set in a soundscape harkening to the early jazz era, Trashcan Joe has a unique sound with a broad appeal. The fact that the instruments are made from recycled and found objects is quickly lost to their stellar musicianship. It’s no wonder they are a steadily working live band and have performed at events such as Pickathon, Burning Man, Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Live Wire, the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle , Oregon Country Fair, and were the house band at the Candidates Gone Wild at the Roseland Theater.

Trashcan Joe also has soundtrack work on the resumé. They scored the music for the Aurora award winning OPB special Zig-Zag which explores the stories of several Portland area commuters. Later came the feature motion picture Lipstick and Dynamite, which chronicles the history of women’s wrestling and includes TJoe music as part of the soundtrack. TCJ was well received at NYC’s 2008 Tribeca Film Festival in the film “The Auteur.” Most recently they licensed music for a TV commercial by American Family Insurance.

Cap’n James Cook – vocals. Creator of the Trashcanjo, the Trashcan Bass, the Tuborgan, and the Can o’ PA.
Our Beloved Founder. Written more songs than you and your three best friends combined. Former member of the Wags, current member of Ipanemia.

Jason Wells – vocals, cornet, zob stick, Lead extrovert. Composer of some of Tjoe’s most memorable songs.
While his cornet isn’t actually made from a trash can, he claims to affect a “trashy style”.
A member of March Fourth Marching Band, and engineer of Trashcan Joe recordings at his studio Audiowells.

Mike Danner – vocals, accordion, melodica, tuborgan Honey-voiced singer. Slick jazz accordionist. Was featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Oregon Art Beat. Also performs solo and with his band Velvida Underground. His Accordion Crimes website features duets with Portland’s premier songwriters.

Yascha Noonberg – trashcan bass, vocals. Also in the band Calynco, where he is the master of the steel drum. In Trashcan Joe he is the master of a much more refined instrument, the steel trashcan bass. A true musical alchemist, Yascha can turn garbage into gold at will. The owner of Starfish Studios, he records and teaches some of Portland’s best musicians, all while making bubbling and gurgling noises.

Trashcan Joe is what you have, and that is more than enough – Joe
