Mural
Installation Event
produced by the
Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council and the
Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce
The
November 19th, 2010 "Morning Spark", a bi-monthly event
produced by the Clackamas County Chamber of Commerce in
Wilsonville, was the dedication of the four murals in
the Wilsonville Visitor Center. The Wilsonville Arts &
Cultural Council commissioned the works as a gift to the
citizens of Wilsonville. These murals have been
produced by Hector Hernandez to beautify the Clackamas
County Visitor Center and Wilsonville Chamber of
Commerce building.
The
murals have been produced over the past four years with
public participation during the annual Festival of
Arts.
Muralist Hector Hernandez spoke for about fifteen
minutes describing the content and intent of the four
murals.
Click here to view the video.
Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council hosted the event with
the Chamber of Commerce, providing a light breakfast
fare.
Address:
29600 SW Park Place, Wilsonville,
OR

Mural #1 - 2007
The focal point of the first mural is a wintry,
snow-capped Mount Hood towering over a scene from
Wilsonville's distant past - a past which includes the
earliest settlers depicted by a member of the Calapooia
tribe. Elements of our future importance as a hub
for trade and transit include a steamboat on the
Willamette River, the Oregon Electric Railroad bridge,
the Wilsonville Cash Store and pioneer and ferry boat
operator Alphonso Boone. The flow of the river and
trade set the foundation of Wilsonville.

Mural #2 - 2008
The second mural depicts
Wilsonville’s more recent past, focusing on the
community’s transition from a rural farming community to
a center of transit and trade. The updated train on the
bridge replaces the old Oregon Electric Railroad and
exemplifies the progress of the community.
Wilsonville’s
first schoolhouse contrasts with the new high school,
illustrating the progress of the human dimension. Also
depicted is the traffic on Interstate-5 and Boone Bridge, which
replaced the Boones Ferry. The Willamette River
provides a
unifying theme for the murals.

Mural #3 - 2009
The third mural looks toward the future and the
potential of our community. The new Wilsonville City
Hall, WES – our rail connection to the larger Portland
Metro area, and the solar collection panels on I-5
attest to the area’s entry into the twenty-first century
as well as its continued importance as a trade and
transportation hub. The rural aspect remains vibrant,
with filbert orchards, tree farms, and livestock. And
now, many surrounding hillsides are planted with
vineyards.

Mural #4 - 2010
The fourth mural is all
about people and our community at work and play in the
summer months. The focus is our popular and
well-attended summer events – Rotary’s Concerts in the
Park, Celebration Days’ Fun in the Park, Wilsonville
Arts and Culture Council’s Festival of Arts and the
Library’s summer reading program. The Korean War
Memorial and Murase Fountain in Town Center Park are
central to the mural, and a horse and rider remind us of
both Wilsonville’s rural past and its present newer
identity as ‘Horse Country’.

'Les Mis'
Performance at Wilsonville High School
by Chris
Lindrigan
Two months ago a group of
students from Wilsonville High School began a
process that would eventually lead to the dramatic
performance of the opera: Les Miserables. After
slaving together at practices and rehearsals the
cast had their first show on November 4th,
and closed at a matinee showing on Saturday the 20th.
Both of these showings, opening and closing, were
PACKED. Anyone who came to one of these shows not
only remembers the beauty and above-high-school
level of the acting, but also the elbows of the
person next to them. The full house did not take
away from the performance though- the cast was even
more excited by the hundreds of people before them
and sang even better.
These types of performances do
not come from hard work; they come from everyone
working hard. The director: Jason Katz, musical
director: Sue Schreiner, costumes manager: Linda
Lockyear, set designer: John Gerth, lighting
designer: Michael Chapman, set construction: (all
that follow) Kevin Cameron, George Spady, Jim
Lamberson, and Matthew Miller, and last but not
least the crew coordinator: John Fitzerald. All of
the people above put their heart and soul into
making Les Miserables what it was: amazing. Of
course all the names of people who helped this
performance shine cannot be listed since there are
so many. But nonetheless we all express our
gratitude for the very hard work and passion put
into this opera by the cast, the technical crew, the
manager, and anyone who helped with its production.
This high school performance is
one of many examples of the arts and culture of
Wilsonville High school. There is no greater example
of drama than with the thespians of WVHS. The next
show that the school will be producing is “The Odd
Couple”.

a positive community image, attract visitors, share the

civic pride. We want to provide “Something for
Everyone.”

more. The silent auction, held in the

of the historic and art locations around Wilsonville.
The free Trolley tours are available Saturday at the
Festival.
History
The Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council was founded in
1995 by Theonie Gilmore. Her vision was to promote
access to arts and culture for everyone
in Wilsonville, as
well as provide a unifying force for various art events in our
community. Over time, the annual festival developed into one
of the top events in Wilsonville and today is an outlet
for both local and regional performing and visual
artists, as well as an educational resource for children.
The art festival and special events help
define the City of
Wilsonville,
attract new business, and stimulate local economic
growth.
After 11 years presenting the Wilsonville Festival of Arts,
Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council has maintained its
philosophy of “Art and Culture for Everyone” by
continuing to act as an umbrella or as a sponsor for
local events throughout the year. Those events have
included “A Ferry Tale - the History of Wilsonville"
presented by the Wilsonville Theater Company, I-5
Connection's vocal ensembles presentation of 'Songs of
America', Todd Green - multi-instrumentalist
demonstration/ concert in schools and community, the
'Book Notes' concert series at the Wilsonville Library
presented by Friends of the Library, to name a few.
Participants
The Wilsonville Festival of Arts 'Art on the Town'
features local and regional visual artists, musicians,
vendors and entertainers.
Media & Marketing
Wilsonville Festival of Arts is developing a strong
media profile and is working to develop an excellent
relationship with local media. A comprehensive event
schedule is produced and distributed throughout the
community via local media sources and placed at the
Visitor
Center
and many other locations throughout the area.
Press releases are issued to print and broadcast media
sources locally and in surrounding cities. Event posters
will be distributed throughout Wilsonville and the
surrounding area.
Funding
The Wilsonville Festival of Arts is brought to the
public in part by grants, sponsors, concessions, and vendors
fees.

The Arts and Culture Alliance of Wilsonville
Kristin Akervall
Please allow
us to introduce ourselves: we’re The Arts and Culture
Alliance of Wilsonville. The ACA has a brand new name
and a crystal clear mission – to enhance the quality of
life in Wilsonville by promoting and supporting arts and
culture. We’re your neighbors, your friends and local
business people. You may know us already. Or, you may
be new or just getting acquainted. Either way, we’d
love to meet you. The ACA is open to the entire
Wilsonville community: individuals, business owners,
artists and students. We currently meet twice a month,
on the second and fourth Monday evening of each month,
from 5:30-7:00 p.m. All are welcome.
Have you
missed seeing the rotating sculpture display around
town? We have. When Wilsonville’s sculpture program
lost funding about a year ago, we jumped into action.
It’s one of our first priorities and we hope to see the
sculptures return this coming year.
Overall, we
want to help the arts, culture, and heritage be a vital
part of Wilsonville’s future by supporting art programs
in Wilsonville and helping raise funding and volunteers
for the organizations already established here.
Do you have
specific areas of interest in the arts? Are you hoping
for more music, visual arts or performing arts programs
in our community? Please, come share your ideas and
join us. We’re interested and especially looking for
friends who’d like to get involved.
If you wish
to learn more, send us a note with your contact email
and phone number so we can include you in our
communications.

The Wilsonville Theater Company Presentation Of
"Who's On First?"
A Smashing Success
The Wilsonville Theater Company's production of "Who's On
First?" October 21st and October 22nd was performed at the Frogpond
Grange Hall, and a 'smashing' success it was! The
four lead actors gave a superb performance, especially
for having to memorize multitudes of lines in such a
variety of characters. Staring were Brenda Walter
as Camille, Peter Wiedensmith as Don, Tami Wiedensmith
at Alice, and Kendall Auel as Ben. The single
stationary set created by Kirk Shultz beautifully
accommodated the play's action. Director Dan
Sherman lent just the right amount of wit to the
production and Peter Wiedensmith created the perfect
sound effects to accompany the scenes. Everyone in
the Theater Company worked hard to produce a terrific
and entertaining show.
The play is a nightmare comedy, "Who's On
First" by Jack Sharkey, Directed by Dan Sherman. Four
people find themselves reliving one horrible hour over
and over as themselves, as Japanese, as British
aristocrats and as gangsters. Take a husband, wife,
lover and friend, add a strange lamp, a gun and a rubber
chicken plus a party that begins at
8:00 p.m. then again at
8:00 p.m. and then again at
8:00 p.m. doomed to live the same hour over and
over until they get it right and you have the basic idea
about this comedy. Is it all an accident or is their
dilemma part of someone's fiendish plan?
DVD's
edited of the combined two evening performances are
available for sale at
http://digitalvideodocs.com/Video_Sales.htm where
you can view the video trailer. One half the
profits from sales benefit the Wilsonville Theater
Company.

Oregon Symphonic Band
to Perform in Canby and Tualatin
The Oregon Symphonic Band (OSB) is
Oregon’s premier symphonic band. Formed in 1988, the
award-winning band is comprised of 65 brass, wind and
percussion players, all volunteering to play together
for their love of music. These players are some of the
Portland-area’s finest amateur and professional
musicians. Each year the band plays three concert
series, playing a range of music from marches to jazz,
orchestral transcriptions and Broadway show tunes, to
contemporary band literature.
OSB has performed at the Northwest
regional conventions of the Music Educators National
Conference, the Western International Band Clinic, and
the Oregon Adult Band Festival. In December, 2006, the
band had the prestigious honor of performing at the
internationally renown
Midwest Clinic in
Chicago. Featured past soloists with the band
include Allen Vizzutti (trumpet), James Walker (flute),
Bill Watrous (trombone), Fred Sautter (cornet), Robert
Spring (clarinet), John Cox (horn), Gordon Soli
(bassoon) and Adair Chappell (vocalist). In October,
2006, OSB premiered “Beautiful Oregon”, a piece
commissioned by the band and composed by James Barnes.
In 2006 OSB was awarded the
prestigious Sudler Silver Scroll award by the John
Philip Sousa foundation, the highest award a community
band can receive.
OSB makes its home at Tualatin High
School. The band has often invited selected high school
students to perform with them, in keeping with its
mission of promoting music education in our schools.
During the summer, OSB regularly performs at the
“Showtime at Shute” summer concerts at Shute Park in
Hillsboro.
Dr. Michael Burch-Pesses, director of bands at
Pacific University, is the conductor and music director
for the Oregon Symphonic Band.

City of Falling Angels by John
Berend
Venice, a city steeped in a thousand years of
history, art and architecture, teeters in
precarious balance between endurance and decay.
Its architectural treasures crumble—foundations
shift, marble ornaments fall—even as efforts to
preserve them are underway. The city of falling
angels opens on the evening of January 29, 1996,
when a dramatic fire destroys the historic
Fenice opera house. The loss of the Fenice,
where five of Verdi’s operas premiered, is a
catastrophe for venetians. Arriving in Venice
three days after the fire, Berendt becomes a
kind of detective—inquiring into the nature of
life in this remarkable museum-city—while
gradually revealing the truth about the fire.

New to the Wilsonville Festival of Arts for 2011
New
this year: We are
setting up a special area for artist groups and guilds
to demonstrate their craft and work with the public. In
exchange, we will provide a free 10X10 booth space and a
tent canopy where the groups can also display and sell
their work.
We are
looking for 5 groups of varied mediums to participate.
See 'Demo Row' on the proposed site plan.
Demonstrations and hands-on public interaction is a
great way to promote interest in art and should bring
good attendance to the artist's site.
Kid's
Stuff Lane: The
Wilsonville Festival of Arts is also dedicated to
introducing children to arts and culture. Annually we
have a children's area where they can experience the
creative spirit within them. We are looking for people
who can help these creative souls learn through
interactive experience. This is great not only for
artists, but for people who love to work with kids. A
good opportunity for students in studies related to
working with children to volunteer and potentially earn
academic credit (check with your teachers or counselor).
The
Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council and Wilsonville
Festival of Arts are all volunteer committees. We
depend on volunteers to bring Art and Culture to the

Produced by the Wilsonville Arts
&
Culture Council
This will be Wilsonville’s 12th
annual signature arts event, held in Town Center Park -
the very heart of
Wilsonville. The festival attracts both local and
out-of-town guests.
Last year’s attendance was
over 4,000 curious, interested and fun-loving
participants.
We’d love to have you join us …
Folks come to the Wilsonville Festival of Arts for a
variety of reasons:
. to
enjoy and purchase unique, high quality pieces of art
from juried, professional artists
.
meet and interact with the artists as they create their
works of art – right there at the festival
.
see the artistic projects of talented, local grade
school and high school students
.
see live musical, dance, storytelling and dramatic
performances on the park’s stage
.
participate in the community Parade, Special Projects,
or the interactive Children’s Pavilion
We need you …
We
need the help of those who live, work and do business in
Wilsonville to share in the financial investment needed
to produce this community arts celebration. Our
sponsoring organization, Wilsonville Arts & Culture
Council, is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization
dedicated to enriching the cultural and artistic lives
of everyone in our city. For you, this is an opportunity
to promote a good cause and demonstrate your community
involvement and responsibility.
We believe there are significant benefits to sponsorship
…
. to
create awareness and visibility of your company and your
product or service, and stimulate sales
.
showcase products and services at the festival and in
our promotional materials and program
.
demonstrate community spirit and commitment
To encourage your partnership, we offer …
. an
opportunity to market to event attendees in pre-event
publicity and event program
.

Hospitality, Literary or Children’s Pavilions)
