performance headliner. Rindy & Marv Ross are the singer/songwriter
duo that founded Seafood Mama, Quarterflash, and The Trail Band.
Oregon natives, they are best known for their
5 top-forty songs with Quarterflash including their #1 hit, Harden
My Heart.
After a decade in the eighties of gold and
platinum records and extensive touring with Elton John, Linda
Ronstadt, and Jefferson Starship, the Rosses moved back to Oregon
and created The Trail Band - a brass and string early Americana band
that has released 10 CDs and has toured internationally including a
rare two-week series of appearances in North Korea.
Marv & Rindy also co-created the hit Artist
Rep musical, 'The Ghosts of Celilo' with Native American artists
Thomas Morning Owl and Chenoa Egawa, garnering 8 Portland Area
Musical Theatre Awards.
In 2009, they released "Goodbye Uncle Buzz"
their first duet CD.
The Rosses were inducted into The Oregon Music
Hall of Fame and received the Alumni Award of Excellence from

Call for Volunteers
The Wilsonville Festival of Arts is now an officially sanctioned
event for the Portland Rose Festival. The designation brings the
annual community festival some exciting new opportunities. One of
them is a chance to tell Rose Festival visitors about the Festival
of Arts, just down the freeway in Wilsonville.
To
get the word out, volunteers are needed to staff the booth at the
Rose Festival City Fair in Portland on Memorial Weekend, May 27 –
30.
There are many other jobs, large and small, for community supporters
who want to help stage this unique and popular event which
celebrates the arts – visual, dramatic, musical and literary.
Everyone can contribute to the success envisioned for 2011 and is
invited to be part of the inspiration, planning and final production
of the annual Wilsonville Festival of Arts 2011, June 4 and 5.

Beauty &
the Bridge: The I-5 Connection
Wilsonville schools and
students will be involved in the design, creation, and development
of the student focused public art project.
(excerpt from
SMART website:)
Wilsonville Road is the key to linking travel
east and west in our community, and The Wilsonville Road Interchange
Enhancement Project is the key ingredient for investing in a safe,
secure, and pleasant pedestrian and bicycle connection under I-5.
The
City of Wilsonville and the
Oregon Department of Transportation are
re-designing and improving the I-5 interchange on Wilsonville Road.
The goals are to connect
Wilsonville with:
-
A
safe east/west bicycle and pedestrian crossing under I-5
-
An
inviting, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing environment to
improve mobility and encourage bicycling and walking
-
A
school-based process that involves students in design, creation,
and production of public art along the underpass walls
Wilsonville students will
have the opportunity to craft a truly local work of art that
connects them not only today to a unique civic and educational
experience but also to Wilsonville for years to come.

Public Art
Sculpture Returns to Wilsonville
The first of eight new public art
sculptures was put in place at Town
Center Park on January 7th. The
life-sized horse sculpture was created by local artist Jesse
Swickard.
The Arts and Culture
Alliance of Wilsonville, a core group of volunteers, has formed the
new committee not only to bring back the public sculptures through
new funding sources, but to revitalize art, culture and historical
projects.
“We are pleased to
announce that the first of eight public sculptures is in place,”
said ACAW steering committee member David DeHart, in an email to the
group’s supporters. He also stood by on the chilly January morning
as Swickard carefully rolled the horse sculpture into place. A cold
rain pelted down, but it couldn’t diminish DeHart’s smile.
The sculpture,
nicknamed 'Willie', is hosted by the Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce
and Oregon Horse Country and remain as an installation for one
year.

It’s that time of
year when the major art competitions and exhibitions begin.
Wilsonville High School artists have had wonderful success so far
this winter!
* Scholastic
Art Awards 2011: Portland Metro Regional Judging
Results are in for
the regional judging of Scholastic Art Awards (perhaps the oldest
award organization in the nation that acknowledges excellence in
visual arts and writing. Gold Key winning works proceed to the
national competition in New York, where Wilsonville H.S. has fared
well in the past. Thirty-one WHS artists submitted 148 total works
this year (the highest number of submissions, ever, from our
school), which were judged by category; each category was assigned
three judges who are prominent, regional artists who work in that
given medium. Ninety-five out of the 148 works from our school were
recognized by the judges.
- The Gold Key Exhibition
Gold Key works by
WHS artists featured in a group exhibition at Pacific Northwest
College of Art for the month of February included:
Kalia Bistolas
(drawing), Felicia Davis (painting), Lucy Lawrence (5
photographs, 1 painting),
Corinne Luper
(3 drawings), Rachel Pappadis (painting),
Lauren Salgado (painting), Elise Schalk (painting),
Hannah Sedlak (drawing),
Jaylene
Vanderhoff (drawing),
Tiera Wiegand (painting).
-
Senior Portfolios
All five of our submitted senior portfolios received awards
this year! Elise
Schalk (painting), Lucy Lawrence (photography),
and Hannah Sedlak
(photography) received Gold Keys and their portfolios have
continued on to
the national competition. Additionally, Schalk and
Lawrence received
sizable scholarships from art programs for their excellent
portfolios (Oregon
College of Art and Craft and Marylhurst University,
respectively). Silver
Keys went to Lucy Lawrence (painting portfolio) and
Hannah Sedlak
(mixed-media portfolio).
-
Category Winners
Lucy Lawrence
(photography) and Corinne Luper (drawing) won two of the ten
category awards for best performance!
*
High School Art Northwest 2011 @ George Fox University
This annual,
juried exhibition features works from high school students from
Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, who are allowed to submit only two
pieces each. An outside juror (a regionally-acclaimed artist)
selects from hundreds of submissions. This year, seven works by
Wilsonville H.S. artists were featured in the February show at the
Donald Lindgren Gallery in the Ross Center. Two of our artists,
Hannah Sedlak and Lucy Lawrence, earned cash prizes for
their Honorable Mention recognitions. The other WHS artists whose
work got into the show are Felicia Davis, Cameron DePiero,
Corinne Luper, and Elise Schalk.

Executive Director revisits 2007 honor at 'Heart of Gold: 10-Year
Reunion'
Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council
Executive Director, Theonie Gilmore, had a lot of fun at the
Rotary's 'Heart of Gold' Ten Year Reunion dinner. Theonie won the
2007 'First Citizen' award.
...
"Theonie, a music educator, moved to Wilsonville in 1973 and has
been a strong advocate for the arts ever since. She founded the
Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council which produces the yearly
Wilsonville Festival of Arts. She has also spearheaded the creation
of oral history tapes and placement of historic murals in the
Wilsonville Clackamas County Visitor Center."...
The
Heart of Gold dinner is the Rotary’s primary fund-raising event and
previous winners have been invited to attend and take another bow.
Attire this year is recommended as “reunion, prom or vintage wear.”
This
years 'First Citizen' award goes to Debbie Laue, who was selected
from a pool of many deserving, service-minded citizens for her
incredible service, from serving on the chamber of commerce board of
directors, chairing the Grad Night party for Wilsonville High School
and establishing the Fun in the Park community celebration, just to
name a few of her accomplishments.

"Cinderella's
Dream"
Performances: April 29th & 30th and May 6th & 7th.
Beauty may only be skin deep, but it's ugly
that hits the funny bone! While Cinderella and her prince play it
straight, her stepmother, the Archduke, and the stepsisters are
wacky comical. A combination of slapstick, sly asides, and pratfalls
make this a great stage comedy. The fairy godmother works behind the
scenes with fairy dust and funny lines to help Cinderella's dreams
come true. Lots of laughs. Hilarious situations, witty lines and
zany characterizations make this full-length play memorable
entertainment for all ages.
Performances will be held at: Frogpond Grange

Joke Du Jour
Recently a guy in Paris nearly got away with stealing several
paintings from the Louvre. However, after planning the crime,
breaking in, evading security, getting out and escaping with the
goods, he was captured only two blocks away when his Econoline van
ran out of gas. When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and
then make such an obvious error, he replied:-"I had no Monet to buy
Degas to make the Van Gogh."
