Now in its ninth year, the SMARTArt Project works with Wilsonville public school students to link artistic creativity and transportation. This year, the project serves as an interim involvement step for Boeckman Creek Primary for the Beauty and the Bridge Project. The selected art will appear on the outside of a SMART bus beginning this summer for the entire community to see. Next year, Boeckman students will become participating tile artists in the project.

Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council (WACC)

Ten Reasons WACC Enhances the Wilsonville Community

by Sandra Berry

As a former board member of the Wilsonville Arts and Culture council, I was asked why Wilsonville should support the organization and how it enhances the community. The following are 10 reasons I believe WACC activities enrich the livability of Wilsonville.

1. Promotes opportunities to learn about arts and culture.

2. Increases public awareness of the arts.

3. Provides opportunities for citizens to promote their talents in various fields of the arts.

4. Produces a 2 day Festival of the Arts which is open to the public free of charge.

5. Coordinates with other arts groups in the community including the Wilsonville Theater Company, the Wilsonville Arts Alliance and the Public Sculpture project; I-5 Music Group; Wilsonville Boones Ferry Historical Society.

6. Coordinates and supports activities throughout the public school system.

7. Connects with business groups and other organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Wilsonville Public Library, the Community Center and the City of Wilsonville.

8. Promotes tourism through events such as the Festival of the Arts and the Public Sculpture project.

9. Works with other organizations to advocate for artistic and cultural representation and to research possible projects.

10. Finally, because The Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council believes that arts and culture are essential in the human experience, its main endeavor is to increase public awareness of the arts and to promote and celebrate this notion.

The Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council (WA&C) is a ‘Presenting’ and ‘Arts Service’ organization founded in 1996 as a 501(c)(3)tax exempt organization.  This all volunteer arts organization produces a quarterly email newsletter available at: www.WilsonvilleArts.org

Wilsonville Arts & Wellness Center

Several years ago members of our board participated in a planning process to add the term “performing arts center “ to the City of Wilsonville 20 year Master Plan. Now is the time for the public to give input to the City Council.

The Wilsonville City Council 2011-12 goals include: “ Commence and make substantial progress on feasibility of a Recreation Center“.

I invite you to help the arts community give input and make substantial progress on the feasibility of a Performing Arts Center. Could a facility with an auditorium for theater, dance and other stage productions also be use for seating for conferences? Could this be a multi-purpose facility with a performing arts center and a swimming pool? Could there be an enclosed garden atrium space that would house a lunch deli?

The new Wilsonville City Manager and City Council have said they want to engage in a community conversation. They want to know what the people think is important to enhance our livability.

Please be part of the community conversation by attending City Council meetings on Monday nights at City Hall.

I want to share with you these words by Barry Johnson, an arts journalist, and Executive Director of Oregon Arts Watch

The arts are central to the sustenance, renovation, celebration and recreation of our life together in the Northwest. They aren’t a decoration or a sideshow. They give us an ongoing reflection of ourselves.

They suggest solution…They encourage us to think and feel along with them…The arts have helped us create a shared language, shared experiences and ultimately, shared values…We believe that we won’t have a functioning democracy without arts to feed and nourish us.. We won’t have a vigorous economy without arts to inspire and model our creative response to the world. We won’t have healthy individuals without the space for insight that the arts provide… The arts remind us that the individual can do great things, and so can individuals acting together.”

I ask you—people of Wilsonville – be the individuals acting together that will help produce a Wilsonville Arts Center.

Theonie Gilmore, Executive Director

Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council

I-5 Interchange Project

As Wilsonville Road interchange area converts from six lanes to eight lanes for vehicular safety and capacity improvements, bicyclists and pedestrians also benefit with better east/west crossings under I-5. Wilsonville’s young student artists are creating art to be incorporated into the design that will beautify the environment and make it as inviting, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing as possible, with the goals of improving mobility and encouraging bicycling and walking.

“This project has the potential to change the face of Wilsonville and create a welcoming gateway to the community. The richness of Wilsonville’s natural resources will be celebrated in the design. I’m so proud of City leadership and their decision to invest in this focal point of the community by improving safety, capacity, and at the same time bringing beauty to this large scale infrastructure project. The best part of the project is that the young people of Wilsonville will be the “artists” creating this welcoming gateway for enjoyment today and long into the future. “ noted Cynthia Thompson, Project Manager.

Wilsonville High School’s Advanced Placement Art Students began designing the sidewalk railing - a key component of the I-5 / Wilsonville Road Interchange Project’s bicycle and pedestrian enhancements. Jerry Werner, the artistic director, launched students’ creativity with an overview of what public art can do for a community and the students role in its creation.

“My students are taking their commission from the city for this major public art piece very seriously. They have risen to the challenge, responded well to the early critique of their designs, and are producing a level of work that will astound the citizenry of this community. The people of Wilsonville will not believe that these railings were designed by high school students.”

Christopher Sholota Hardt, WHS Art Director

Wilsonville's Arts and Culture Alliance installs 3 public sculptures

Three new sculptures sprouted around Wilsonville this month, thanks to the efforts of the Arts and Culture Alliance of Wilsonville.

The group has raised approximately $6,000 for the rotating sculpture program, which is working to fill seven spots vacated in 2009 when funding evaporated.

A call to artists went out in February and 20 responded. These three sculptures were chosen by juried selection, and the group hopes to raise additional funding for more rotating works.

"We like the idea of rotating pieces because it wakes people up and makes them take notice," said board member Keith Amundson. He said the money pays for installation and provides some compensation to the artists. The works are for sale, but the artists have agreed to leave them installed for two years.

The new sculptures are "Rising Gate" by Carolyn Mills of Oregon City, at Wilsonville City Hall; "Beacon" by Nicky Falkenhayn of Portland, at Town Center Park; and "Let's Dance" by Jim Johnson of Salem, at the WES station.

The Arts and Culture Alliance of Wilsonville is seeking volunteers as it considers future arts programs. Its next meeting is at 5:00 p.m. Monday, September 12, at the Wilsonville Community Center, 7965 S.W. Wilsonville Road. For more information, contact Keith Amundson, 503-694-1065.

Oregon Horse Country Statement

According to the USDA Ag Census in 2007, Clackamas County Oregon is one of the top 10 horse counties in the country. We know how many horses there are in the county (on the farms that make more than $1000 each year), but that’s all we know statistically. This lack of information about the horse industry makes it difficult to provide the proof we need to solicit grant and economic development dollars and to attract horse events and horse-related businesses to the area.

We ask the help of members of the horse community in gathering some solid information about the value and impact of the horse industry that's in the Clackamas County area. If we can document and recognize the look and value of the horse industry here, then we can attract more economic development dollars, tourism dollars, grants and other resources, businesses and events to our county’s horse industry. We invite input from equine enthusiasts of all sizes – from the single horse owner to the stable owner to the horse event manager.

The impact of this study will be much broader than just the county. If this survey model is successful in reaching a credible sample of horse enthusiasts, then other counties can replicate the study, giving the entire region’s horse industry a comprehensive and valuable tool to assist industry growth and voice.

Please help us keep the horse industry vibrant, and help it grow and prosper in the future by spreading the word to other horse people who live in or board horses in Clackamas County, and encouraging their participation in completing The Equine Survey. Thank you!

Wilsonville's 11th Annual Fall Food Fest

Get ready to enjoy the 11th annual Fall Food Festival on Wednesday, September 14th, 4:00-8:00 pm, at the Wilsonville Family Fun Center. The goal of this event is to showcase the many great eateries in our area, including this year Wilsonville, West Linn, Tualatin, and Sherwood. We also hope you come and find a new favorite spot to dine!

We have made a few changes this year to grow the event and make it more fun! First, we will be moving the Food Fest to the east side of the Wilsonville Family Fun Center parking lot, rather than against the building. This will allow us new layout opportunities as well as a chance to expand the number of food vendors, sponsor booths, and seating that we have. Secondly, we are offering Buy-One, Get-One ticket coupons through the Chamber office which will get you a great discount!

Tickets are only $10 in advanced (until September 13th) for Adults, $5 for Kids (6-12 years old), and Children 5 & under are free. Prices increase by $2 each at the gate. Tickets and coupons are available through the Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce Office - 29600 SW Park Place, Wilsonville. Office is open Monday-Friday: 8:30 am-5:00 pm, Saturday & Sunday: 10:00 am-4:00 pm.

So let us plan your dinner on September 14th, 4:00-8:00 pm, to be a night out with the Fall Food Fest.

For more information, contact Brandi Hereford, Event Director, at 503-682-0411 or Brandi@WilsonvilleChamber.com.

2011 Festival of Arts Better Than Ever

The 2011 Wilsonville Festival of Arts had a great year.  There were over 100 visual artists, performers, and literary artists.  Wilsonville High and Art Tech High students provided crafts and interactive projects, new elements of this year's event.  Also new this year was the addition of the Literary Arts with Author book signings and sales as well as children's library performances provided by Steven Engelfried, Wilsonville's Youth Services Librarian.

With the generous donation from Fred Meyer, the Festival contracted with it's first major headliner band, 'Trail Band', to close out the Saturday stage performances.

The Silent Auction Student Scholarship Benefit fell just barely short to provide funding for the 2011-2012 scholarship round.  The Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council provides two $500 scholarship awards annually to outstanding art students from the Wilsonville School District.

Again this year, the Student Art Pavilion showed off the extraordinary array of works by the Wilsonville/West Linn School District.

Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council is committed to bringing arts and culture to the Wilsonville community.  We will continue to fine tune the event, broaden it's scope and audience and we hope to benefit Wilsonville as a whole with tourism dollars as we expand.  This was our first year as a Rose Festival Sanctioned Event.

If you would like to participate in next year's festival production, please contact Theonie or Kate.  We are starting our activities now.
