Oregon 150
Parade Leads to By Kit Whittaker ‘Hats off! The parade is passing by ...’ And what a community parade it was, thanks to a multitude of volunteers who started organizing months in advance, and to another multitude who lined the streets on May 30 to enjoy the passing fanfare.
The Grand Historic Parade, the first in more than 20 years, celebrated the State of Oregon Sesquicentennial – ‘The Wilsonville Way’. 35 parade entries marked the 15 decades (and 150 years) since Oregon became a state on February 14, 1859.
The whole entourage - from the Drum and Bugle Corps marching in the lead to the Get A Life Marching Band bringing up the rear - ended at Town Center Park and ‘Wilsonville’s Biggest Party’ as the Wilsonville Spokesman so aptly termed the annual May 30 – 31 Festival of Arts.
The parade was the perfect kick-off to a weekend of activities that celebrated the arts – visual, literary and musical. Students shared their artwork in the grand Student Pavilion; 100 professional artists dazzled crowds with the variety and beauty of their creations; musicians entertained. Painting started on a third historic mural, and youngsters created historic arts and crafts in the Kids Pavilion.
Wilsonville loved the whole weekend. And there’s already a buzz about town to kick off next year's Festival of Arts with another parade! |
May 30, 2009 Oregon 150 Parade... ...The Wilsonville Way
Hats off! Along the street there comes A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums … A flash of color beneath the sky, Hats off! The flag is passing by! |

Are you interested in local history? In drama? In celebrating? Then you will definitely want to be part of Oregon’s 150th anniversary celebration - and learn more about Wilsonville’s fascinating past at the same time by attending ‘A Ferry Tale: Wilsonville, Oregon’s Transportation Town’. The play, developed under the leadership of the Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council (WA&CC), is now in production by the Wilsonville Theater Company and will open in October at the Frogpond Grange. ‘A Ferry Tale’ features 30 historically costumed characters, including ferry operator Jesse Boone, Charles Wilson (the first postmaster, for whom Wilsonville was named), and George Law Curry (the first provincial governor of Oregon and Wilsonville resident). Action begins with the first Boone’s Ferry across the Willamette River in the 1850’s and ends with the last Boone’s Ferry river crossing in the 1950’s, when it was replaced by the I-5 bridge. ‘A Ferry Tale’ was commissioned in celebration of the State of Oregon’s sesquicentennial celebration, which officially began here in Wilsonville with a kick-off parade on May 30. It was the first civic parade in more than two decades, and was the culmination of months of planning by a dedicated parade committee, the WA&CC, City of Wilsonville, Festival of Arts Planning Team and others. The play is scheduled to run Friday through Sunday on the first two weeks of October – October 2, 3, 9 and 10 at the Frogpond Grange, 27350 SW Stafford Road. Scenes from the play will also make the circuit of schools in the area. Tickets are available at the website WilsonvilleTheaterCompany.org. and at Wilsonville Lamb’s Thriftway. Adults - $10; Seniors and Students - $7.

Wilsonville’s Northwest Author Series Celebrates an Educational Third Season |
|||
|
September 27, 2009 – Wilsonville, Oregon – The Northwest Author Series has selected the line-up of authors for the 2009-2010 season. Please see the line up on this issue’s ‘Calendar of Events’. “The emphasis this year is on education,” says the creator and host of the series, Wilsonville author Christina Katz. “Our audience has grown over the past two years to 30-50 aspiring authors eager to learn how-to tips from published authors. While creating the lineup for this year, I especially kept an eye out for authors who teach regularly, like memoirist Melissa Hart and children’s author David Michael Slater.” Award-winning young adult author Laura Whitcomb of Wilsonville kicks off the 2009- 2010 Northwest Author Series on September 27th at the Wilsonville Public Library. Her presentation, “Novel Shortcuts,” takes place in the Oak Room from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $5.00 or $3.00 for seniors/students. No advance registration is required. “We’re in our third year,” says Katz, “and we seem to have hit our stride as a community-building event for local writers. People regularly travel from Washington, Salem, and McMinnville for our presentations.” |
Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author afterwards. The series is sponsored by The Wilsonville Public Library, the Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council, and the Friends of the Wilsonville Library. The Northwest Author Series will continue through May each month during the school year except December. Christina Katz, whose books, Get Known Before the Book Deal and Writer Mama were published by Writer’s Digest Books, created and hosts the series. She has selected Wilsonville High School senior Marina Cameron to be the student intern this season. Beard & Bonnets Contest Celebrates Oregon 150 By Peggy Watters |
|||
| The Beards and Bonnets contests were sponsored by the City of Wilsonville as a way of honoring the 150th anniversary of the state of Oregon. Such contests were common in our country’s history and seemed an appropriate way for citizens to participate in this special occasion. It just so happened that there were 150 days from January 1 to the opening of the Arts Festival on May 30, 2009 and so it was decided to have a segment of the beard contest be 150 days of growth from a clean shaven face on January 1 to the length, fullness and style that could be achieved by the festival opening. Two of the seven contestants actually shaved off their original beards to get a fresh start at the 150 day contest. Another section of the contest reflected style, including historic representation of a beard. For the ladies (two male contestants also shared in the fun), a bonnet contest was fashioned. | Bonnets or hats could be historic in nature, representing any decade from 1859 to 2009, or any creation of the maker. Bonnet patterns and demonstrations were made available to encourage participants. The 11 entries included expertly crafted pioneer bonnets, fanciful and colorful hats and a Daniel Boone cap. The crowd judged the most popular beard and bonnet with the help of a homemade applause meter. Ribbons and bouquets of flowers or of a razor and shaving cream were awarded all contestants. Beard contestants closed the event by singing a rendition of “The Brady Bunch”, with lyrics reflecting the ‘Bearded Bunch’ and references to the 150 days of growth. Good humored local participants made it fun for everyone. | ||

Summary of Board
Development Report by Theonie Gilmore |

|
Subjects explored and tasks completed: Strategic Centers – The Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council needs to be at the center of the community. Seek areas to recognize and ways to involve other people in the community. Lead collaboration with a core group to articulate vision and draw 'shoppers' and the 'unconnected' to the organization. Balance between serving and leading. Define art and culture intersections. Document development– A document was created to use with influential points in the city. The document includes what we do, why we do it, how we do it, and ways we add value to the community. Consider adding graphics and formatting into a brochure to use for donors, resource council, and membership solicitation. Develop Partners

To: Wilsonville area businesses: We would like to introduce you to an advertising opportunity for your business, and at the same time support arts & culture in Wilsonville. The Wilsonville Arts & Culture Council (WA&CC) is working with FunDAZ in a fundraising venture. FunDaz’s goal is to help fund schools and other programs by giving consumer’s discounts on products they use every day. Merchants win with customers being drawn to their doors. At this time we are able to offer merchants FREE advertising. Merchants will be listed on the FunDAZ website for WA&CC. They will also be listed on FunDaz national site. WA&CC is making an impact on the Wilsonville Community and beyond. The Council’s mission is to promote and support arts and culture by providing a structure where Wilsonville area arts and culture organizations can work together. WA&CC’s signature event, Wilsonville Festival of Arts, has just celebrated its 10th. anniversary. We are a partner for many other events in the community such as The NW Author’s Series and Book Notes Concert Series—both at the library, and the Wilsonville Theater Company operating at the Frogpond Grange. What we would like to have happen is the business community of Wilsonville to become involved in supporting arts and culture. With this no-cost-for-participation opportunity, as a FunDaz merchant, all that is asked is to provide the best discount you have for card holders, ie: regular “dinner 2 for 1” could be “dinner 2 for 1 plus a free drink”. We understand this may take some creative thinking for some business discounts. Feel free to look at the website www.wilsonvillecard.org to get an idea, then, let your creative juices flow. In the current economic climate, traditional grant funding organizations are cutting back and WA&CC is feeling the effect. It is more important than ever that we build our membership base. We need your help. There are many ways to become a Sponsor. One way is to become a supporting sponsor with the FunDaz savings card. Business can support WA&CC with a bulk purchase and utilize the cards for employee incentives, birthdays, Christmas gifts, or for special customer appreciation. We can create a custom package to meet your needs.
The savings card is good for one year from the date of issue. To
